Picture the scene. It’s 11am Christmas morning. The living room looks like its living through the after effects of a timber yard massacre and everyone is hopped up on Haribo. You can smile through the debris, the mad kids and the karaoke-ing uncles, though, knowing that you are just a few hours from retiring to the fireplace, whereupon you’ll sit down with a G&T in one hand and the Gin Annual in the other, ready to fully immerse yourself into the world of juniper.

The Gin Annual is a lovingly written almanac of the last year in Gin, celebrating all the things that happened over the past 12 months and waggling its fingers in the air to make a few predictions on where the scene is heading.

This year’s addition is packed to the brim with interviews, insight and features on some of our favourite tipples. We spoke to Tarquin Leadbetter about some very exciting news for Southwestern Distillery, we sat down with Desmond Payne of Beefeater to hear about all the changes he’s seen in his fifty years as a distillery and we had a chat with Miika from Kyro Distillery to see just what he thinks of his new competitors (spoiler: he’s possibly one of the nicest people on earth, so don’t expect any mudslinging).

We also embarked on a two day road trip of the South, meeting the Cotswolds team, the guys behind Campfire Gin and the whole Bath Gin set up, amongst others. It was so fun, and great to see the gin’s in their homes. Check out the full write up to see who else we met (and to hear just how terrible the Gin Foundry team’s musical tastes are…).

We also looked at charity gins to see just how generous Gin drinking can be (you’ll be amazed by how much Elephant Gin has raised in the last four years), and we’ve had a look at what’s happening in the wider category, from the Gin-Wine crossover to brands leaning on immersive, experimental events to keep their fans ever engaged.

There are reviews a-plenty, of course, so you can whet your whistle by reading about the Four Pillars range, Garden Tiger Gin, Colonsay, Whittaker’s and Dancing Sands… hopefully you’ll get a notebook in your stocking so you can start drawing up next year’s Christmas list.

As ever, the Gin Annual is an ode to Gin. To those who make it, for those who drink it. It tells the stories you might not otherwise hear, the small details that go into the flavours, the packaging, the brand. It’s about the humans behind the drinks, who deserve applause for quenching our collective thirst on so many occasions.
