Ginvent is back with a bang!
Ginvent season, arguably our favourite time of year, is rolling ‘round again, and while it may seem a way off yet – after all, pumpkin spice has just arrived to decimate our taste buds – these things have a habit of creeping up on us. Before we know it, Santa Clause will be riding high and our off-grey, defeated attempts to make snowmen out of the icing powder scatter of snow we get will be crumbling in sad little heaps.
Christmas is a time of tradition and a time of calling upon other countries and other cultures to share in theirs. We attend German markets in London and eat bratwurst served by people called Anita and Steve, who’s names lend a charming lack of authenticity, but who give it their all anyway. Britain, for its part, has shared some traditions with the world – snogging under the mistletoe, for one. Another tradition we’re pleased to present to the rest of the world – and which we hope can become a regular part of the festive season – is Ginvent, an Advent calendar for grownups with 24 beautiful doors hiding 24 beautiful gins.
The calendars were invented five years ago both as a fun way to try different gins and as a way to help new distilleries and established names alike get discovered by a curious audience. We’ve stayed true to this core idea, with the line up for Ginvent changing year on year. This ensures that regular participants who have enjoyed the calendar in the past will have a raft of new gins to discover, while also giving smaller gin brands a chance to introduce themselves to a whole new audience via the platform.
The 2016 edition is all wrapped up in a snazzy new soft-touch box, with beautiful, hand-drawn botanical illustration on the side and our painstakingly designed tasting wheel on the back. The front is decked out with 24 doors, each festooned in molecular botanical patterns that have a kitsch, knitted-Christmas-jumper look.
Each gin has been considered down to the last detail, and picked for its taste, its branding, its story, its uniqueness and the innovation behind it. The Ginvent Calendar has been made by gin geeks, for gin geeks, and there are so many gins you’re bound not to have tasted yet, from the milk-based Bertha’s Revenge to the mad and delicious Nginious! Smoked and Salted. There are new expressions from old favourites, like Elephant Sloe Gin, and new variants, like Makar’s Old Tom.
All of the drams, at 3CL, carry enough liquid for a tasty G&T and every calendar made should have the same gins served up in the same order, so the experience is shared across the board. This means you can add to the adventure online as well, joining us for nightly Twitter tasting session using the hashtag Ginvent.
As well as this, we’ll be hosting a 10 day pop up experience in Central London complete with a bar, shop and tasting room, where activities ranging from full blown super tastings to intimate candle lit winter drinks will take place.
