Junipalooza Melbourne

What’s Junipalooza you ask? Let’s break it down:

Juni: An abbreviation of Gin’s signature botanical, Juniper.

Palooza: Noun, a party, celebration or festival.

Junipalooza Melbourne is back in October, following a rip roaring debut at the Meat Market in 2016. The annual gin festival will have more distillers, more masterclasses and more gins than last year’s sell-out event.

Junipalooza is very much one of a kind; not only are all of the makers behind each gin there to talk you through their products in person, but every single gin is free to sample and comes with the option to try neat and with tonic.

The festival presents you with the unique opportunity to meet forty distillers; those who’ve shaken off the shackles of corporate life to do their own thing. They’re inspiring, driven people who are only too keen to share their adventures with you over an ice cold G&T. What’s more, there are masterclasses to attend, a bar to hit up and a never-before-seen, world first undertaking that is just a bit too brilliant for us to tell you about quite yet…

You’ll have the opportunity to buy directly from brands, to hear their stories and to become a part of them. There will also be a shop stocking all of the gins on site, so if you don’t want to carry bottles around all day you can hand your tasting notes over to our helpers at the end of the session and pick up an armful.

The main attraction at Junipalooza Melbourne in 2017 will be Australia’s first LIVE distillation using Four Pillar’s experimental still, Eileen. This is a first and is free of charge for everyone to see and will demonstrate exactly how gin is made!

Junipalooza is THE Melbourne event as far as gin fans are concerned, offering obsessives the chance to try something entirely different and newbies the chance to fall in love with the most creative of spirits. The festival is $50 per person, but we’ve set aside a limited number of early bird tickets for $35.

If that wasn’t enough to seal the deal on an amazing gin day out, a Bad Frankie bar will be present serving up some delicious gin cocktails. We’ll also have Burn City Smoker and Maker & Monger serving up food as well as The Brûlée Cart and 196 Degrees Below for some desserts. Water will also be served throughout by Daylesford & Hepburn Springs.

Thriving in the international market is one of the biggest challenges Australian makers face. Who is succeeding abroad at the moment, what are the challenges they face and what are they doing to be successful?

Thank you & Goodbye

BAD FRANKIE TAKE OVER!

Having established their name within both the Melbourne cocktail scene and wider drinks industry, Bad Frankie have shown time and again that "small-batch", “boutique" and "hand-made" doesn’t always mean pretentious and unapproachable.

Named after the infamous Governor of Van Diemen’s Land, John Franklin, who outlawed small pot stills in the early 19th century - Bad Frankie specialises in showcasing a range of Australian spirits from across the country. With their faultless knowledge of Australian craft gin and easy going style - they were always going to be the perfect fit for Juniplaooza.

"Bad Frankie isn’t just a good cocktail bar, it’s a clever cocktail bar aiming to showcase local spirits you never would have heard of, the way they were meant to be enjoyed.” Time Out

On offer this weekend!

HMAS HUON:
A twist on an Army & Navy with the clever use of a macadamia lead Orgeat and Poltergeist Unfiltered Gin, leaving behind a wake of subtly nuanced, dry sensations.

WILD BRUMBY SPRITZ:
A eucalyptus smoked orange and clove spritz using Wild Brumby Gin. Be warned - ‘One moment it’s paradise, the next it’s trying to kill you’!

IMPROVED FLORADORA:
Cassis, Flaming Ginger and herbal liqueur combine to perfection with Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin in this interpretation of the classic Floradora. Improved? More like perfected...

HEAPS GOOD:
This tall, citrus driven drink is just the ticket to restore your palate. With Giniversity Gin, a lemon myrtle sherbet zing and topped with soda, you’ll be quenched and left tingling for more.

MEDICINAL MARTINI:
A twist on the Martini focus on native ingredients, from Adelaide Hills’ Ant Gin a Rosé Vermouth infused with native lime and served up with a desert lime… Tasty!

NEGRONI IN SHEEP’S CLOTHING:
Patient Wolf, Okar Amaro and Maidenii Sweet Vermouth. If it were a fable we think it would begin with “What big eyes you have! The better to see where to order another…”

How do Masterclasses work?

Hosted by either Gin Queen’s Caroline Childerly or Gin Foundry’s Olivier Ward (and often both together!) as well as joined by a range of different gin makers, masterclasses are free to attend and last around 20 minutes.

Places are are allocated on a come first served basis so you cannot reserve spaces in advance.

Buying Gin & The Junipalooza Bottle Shop

Each maker has the opportunity to sell their gins should they want to, although not all will have card readers. We advise those who think they might be interested in buying a bottle or two at the show, to come equipped with cash.

That said, there will also be a gin shop, stocking all the gins at the show and which matches the bottle price of each stand. The aim of the shop is not to take away from the makers themselves, merely, to offer a convenient one stop location with a guaranteed card facility for anyone who wants to to get all their gin in one go.

Press Passes

There are a limited amount of press passes allocated for both days.

Please contact olivier@ginfoundry.com for further details on how to register for one.

Who is the Gin Queen?

Hosting Junipalooza involves a lot of work behind the scenes, preparing masterclasses, selecting gin makers and inviting them to take part while also acting as quality control... When the idea in to host Juniplaooza in Melbourne first emerged, we knew we would need a partner to ensure the show was delivered to the same uber geek calibre as in London. Someone capable of navigating the gin scene, with an insider track on the best and most exciting ginsmiths, an eye for authenticity and someone who shared our values of placing guests first.

Gin Queen founder and editor, Caroline Childerley has all of this and more. Her website has grown out of a love for the juniper juice and the desire to share the gin love with everyone. In the process, Caroline has become an expert in the category and in particular, a leading figure in the Australian Gin scene.
