Junipalooza Melbourne

What’s Junipalooza you ask? Let’s break it down:

Juni: An abbreviation of Gin’s signature botanical, Juniper.

Palooza: Noun, a party, celebration or festival.

Junipalooza: a celebration of all things Gin, with dozens of makers in one room, sharing their love and know-how of the drink, as well as serving up samples of their juniper-laced spirits and generally having a good natter about all things GIN! Oh, and it’s all accompanied by a great bar, a range of talks and guests getting the chance to geek out with kindred spirits.

After three years of the London edition, 2016 is the inaugural year for Junipalooza Melbourne and we want the festival to be as much a celebration of Australian cocktail culture as it is a celebration of Gin. We’ve teamed up with The Gin Queen herself, Caroline Childerley, to host this event and will be flying in from Gin Foundry HQ in London. With us, we’ll also bring a whole host of European ginsmiths, each keen to share their gins with you.

For those of you not familiar with Caroline, she is a veritable library of gin knowledge who launched her website- The Gin Queen– in December 2013, as she wanted to share her enthusiasm for gin and the people who make it. She regularly holds sell-out gin tasting events and has hosted exclusive consumer events with Sipsmith Gin, as well as masterclasses with Laneway Learning and Humble Tumbler. She is a well-regarded industry figure, having made the Top 100 Most Influential List as compiled by Australian Bartender Magazine in 2015 and – having described herself as three parts woman, one part gin – is very much a woman after our own hearts. When the chance to team up for Junipalooza Melbourne arose, we jumped head first.

Junipalooza is a unique gin festival – it’s a Meet the Maker show, not just somewhere with a large selection of gins laid out for you to try (although it’s that as well…). This is a chance for you to meet the people behind your favourite spirit – to see their processes and their motivations and to hear them explain the flavour journeys they’ve created with their spirits. Australian Gin has boomed in recent years and many of the artisans from this new era of Gin will be at the show, in person.

On the day, you’ll get a chance to meet ginsmiths from all over and you’ll be invited to sample a range of their amazing botanical blends. With a bar serving up amazing cocktails, a dedicated masterclass area and the opportunity to buy directly from the makers, it’s an amazing chance to stock up on both knowledge and gin as you explore the world’s best tipple.

Junipalooza Melbourne will take place on the 22nd and 23rd October at the Meat Market in Melbourne, with each day running from 12 – 6pm. We’re really excited about taking Junipalooza global and absolutely can’t wait to geek out with our Australian readers, joined by over 20 Australian ginsmiths to do so…

BAD FRANKIE TAKE OVER!

Having established their name within both the Melbourne cocktail scene and wider drinks industry, Bad Frankie have shown time and again that "small-batch", “boutique" and "hand-made" doesn’t always mean pretentious and unapproachable.

Named after the infamous Governor of Van Diemen’s Land, John Franklin, who outlawed small pot stills in the early 19th century - Bad Frankie specialises in showcasing a range of Australian spirits from across the country. With their faultless knowledge of Australian craft gin and easy going style - they were always going to be the perfect fit for Juniplaooza.

"Bad Frankie isn’t just a good cocktail bar, it’s a clever cocktail bar aiming to showcase local spirits you never would have heard of, the way they were meant to be enjoyed.” Time Out

How do Masterclasses work?

Hosted by either Gin Queen’s Caroline Childerly or Gin Foundry’s Olivier Ward (and often both together!) as well as joined by a range of different gin makers, masterclasses are free to attend and last around 20 minutes.

Places are are allocated on a come first served basis so you cannot reserve spaces in advance.

Buying Gin & The Junipalooza Bottle Shop

Each maker has the opportunity to sell their gins should they want to, although not all will have card readers. We advise those who think they might be interested in buying a bottle or two at the show, to come equipped with cash.

That said, there will also be a gin shop, stocking all the gins at the show and which matches the bottle price of each stand. The aim of the shop is not to take away from the makers themselves, merely, to offer a convenient one stop location with a guaranteed card facility for anyone who wants to to get all their gin in one go.

Press Passes

There are a limited amount of press passes allocated for both days.

Please contact olivier@www.ginfoundry.com for further details on how to register for one.

Who is the Gin Queen?

Hosting Junipalooza involves a lot of work behind the scenes, preparing masterclasses, selecting gin makers and inviting them to take part while also acting as quality control... When the idea in to host Juniplaooza in Melbourne first emerged, we knew we would need a partner to ensure the show was delivered to the same uber geek calibre as in London. Someone capable of navigating the gin scene, with an insider track on the best and most exciting ginsmiths, an eye for authenticity and someone who shared our values of placing guests first.

Gin Queen founder and editor, Caroline Childerley has all of this and more. Her website has grown out of a love for the juniper juice and the desire to share the gin love with everyone. In the process, Caroline has become an expert in the category and in particular, a leading figure in the Australian Gin scene.
